In the past few days a new show has landed at Cast in Doncaster. Wish, devised for babies up to 18 months old, is a great way to start the festive season. The show’s gorgeous visuals were created by Wayne Sables. Read on for more about Wish and how Wayne developed his work for the show.

About Wish

Christmas is a magical time in the theatre and Cast always puts on a great season. Their new show Wish has been especially commissioned for babies, although their adult companions should be charmed by it too. The show is loosely based on the story of Aladdin, which is also Cast’s pantomime for 2021. The audience is taken on a spellbinding journey flying around the world from a flat in Doncaster. This might seem like an unlikely place from which to start an adventure but that’s the genius of theatre.

Wayne’s role

At the beginning of the project Cast asked Wayne if he would consult with them on how best to digitally transform their theatre space. He gave advice on how to create an immersive experience for the audience. Following the success of this meeting, Cast then commissioned Wayne to create the visuals and projection mapping for the show. Wayne’s new role as Digital Creator and Filmmaker involved creating all of the visuals for Wish and also creating promotional films and live recordings of the show to help bring in audiences. After Wish ends, Wayne will work again with Cast to create an additional online element to further engage audiences.

Wayne’s inspiration

For Wayne, the joy of this project was being able to give back to his local community and inspire a new generation of theatregoers. He described it ‘as an absolute honour to be able to work on such a beautiful production in his home theatre’. He is incredibly grateful for the support given him over the last five years by Cast, making him an Associate Artist and helping him navigate the transition from choreographer to digital artist. It’s clear from the visuals he has created for Wish that this transition has gone well.
