Yorkshire Roses: Remembering the Fallen
Barnsley Council, Remembrance 2026

The three Yorkshire Roses at The Seam stand 12 to 15 metres above Barnsley town centre. For Remembrance 2026 I lit all three to a 90-minute recording of Barnsley veterans reading the names of the borough’s fallen.

The reading goes memorial by memorial: Goldthorpe, St Andrew the Apostle and the rest. Each section opens with “Remembering the fallen from...” and the light follows the voices. Each rose has three layers (floor, inner and outer), and they change as one list ends and the next begins. A long list holds the light differently from a short one.

Most people stop for a few minutes rather than the full 90, so the piece doesn’t build to one big finish. Whenever someone arrives, they hear a name being read and see the roses lit for it. It closes with the veterans’ outro and the Last Post.

Programmed and run in MadMapper by Wayne Sables Project.
