In 2020 Doncaster had one drag group. Fluidity started in the back room of a pub as a safe space for the town's LGBTQ+ community. I spent 18 months with its five core members as they tried to take it further.
Bipolar Abdul, Eboni Whyte, Naomi Carter, Anna Popp and Donny Lad. The film follows them from getting ready in one of their houses to shows at The Old Castle and the Wool Market. Lockdown hit halfway through. They moved online, their styles pulled in different directions, and one of them left.
It was made with no funding. It's about what it costs to be visibly different in a northern town, and why five people did it anyway.
Winner, Best Documentary Short, Amsterdam Short Film Festival 2021.
